Buying Filters and Sieves — what matters in the selection
Filters and strainers protect everything downstream. The effort is small and the benefit large — provided fineness and flow rate suit the task and changes follow differential pressure rather than gut feeling.
shukchok carries filter housings, elements, strainers and dirt traps for compressed air, liquid and sample gas applications, stating fineness, connection and permissible working pressure.
In analytical technology one more rule applies: the filter medium must not adsorb the target component. PTFE and glass fibre elements are the standard here.
Selection criteria
Build fineness in stages
A coarse pre-stage extends the life of the fine stage many times over. A single fine filtration without a pre-filter is the most expensive option.
Flow rate at working pressure
Capacity figures apply at a stated pressure. At lower working pressure the permissible flow falls considerably.
Change by differential pressure
Time intervals are a fallback. A differential pressure indicator shows the actual condition and prevents both premature and late changes.
Filter medium material
With sample gases the medium decides the accuracy. Cellulose filters bind moisture and polar components — unsuitable in analytics.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know a filter needs changing?
By differential pressure. Once it exceeds the figure stated by the manufacturer — often around 350 mbar — the element is exhausted. Without an indicator, a fixed interval derived from operating experience is the fallback.
Can I use a finer element in the same housing?
If the dimensions fit, yes. Note that pressure drop rises and service life falls. With substantially finer elements a pre-stage should be added.
Which filters suit sample gases?
PTFE membrane or glass fibre elements. They adsorb little, are chemically resistant and do not falsify the target component — unlike cellulose.
