Buying Pressure Sensors — what matters in the selection
Pressure sensors supply the control variable for pumps, compressors and process control. Selection turns on range, pressure type and output signal — not on the resolution in the data sheet.
shukchok carries pressure sensors, pressure switches and gauges for air, water and process media, stating range, accuracy, process connection and signal.
The most common mistake when replacing: confusing gauge and absolute pressure. Both measure the same physical phenomenon but against a different reference.
Selection criteria
Gauge, absolute or differential
Gauge pressure measures against ambient, absolute against vacuum, differential between two points. Swapping across pressure types shifts the reading by roughly 1 bar.
Overload resistance
Pressure peaks when valves switch lie far above the working pressure. The overload limit should exceed the working pressure several times over.
Process connection and seal
Thread, sealing material and flush mounting must suit the measuring point. With viscous or solids-laden media a flush diaphragm is mandatory.
Signal type for the evaluation
4–20 mA for long cables and wire-break detection, 0–10 V for short runs, switching output for simple limit monitoring.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between gauge and absolute pressure?
Gauge pressure refers to current ambient pressure, absolute to vacuum. An absolute sensor reads about 1 bar when unpressurised, a gauge sensor reads zero.
Can I replace a pressure switch with a sensor?
Only if the evaluation can process an analogue signal. A pressure switch provides a contact, a sensor a measured value — the controller has to be designed for it.
How does medium temperature affect the measurement?
Every sensor has a temperature error stated in the data sheet. With hot media a cooling element or siphon is advisable so the electronics stay within the specified range.
