Buying Piping & Pipe Connectors — what matters in the selection
Piping and fittings decide whether a plant stays tight. The parts themselves are unspectacular — faults almost always arise at the interface: wrong thread, unsuitable material, over-tightened fitting.

In gas analysis material choice counts twice: stainless steel and PTFE behave completely differently towards moist sample gas than galvanised steel, which can falsify readings through adsorption.
Selection criteria
Material by medium and measuring task
Stainless 1.4571 for aggressive media and sample gases, PTFE for highly corrosive applications and low adsorption, copper and brass for compressed air and water.
Identify the thread type unambiguously
Parallel (G/BSPP) seals on a sealing face, tapered (R/BSPT, NPT) on the thread itself. Mixing the two gives a joint that appears to hold and fails under pressure.
Nominal size versus inner diameter
Nominal size is a designation, not a dimension. Pressure-drop calculations need the actual inner diameter including wall thickness.
Respect the tightening figure
Compression fittings are tightened by turns from finger-tight, not by feel. Over-tightened ferrules cut into the tube and start leaking.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use galvanised fittings in a sample gas line?
Not advisable. Zinc reacts with moist and acidic sample gases, which falsifies readings and causes deposits over time. Stainless steel or PTFE is the standard in analytical technology.
How do I tell a G thread from NPT?
A G thread is parallel — the diameter stays constant along its length. NPT is tapered and visibly narrows. When in doubt use a thread gauge rather than trial and error; a wrongly started thread damages the mating part.
Can tubes be supplied cut to length?
Cut-to-length is available through our suppliers. State length, tolerance and required edge treatment — for analytical lines also whether deburred and flushed delivery is needed.
